Respecting Our Deities: A Note on AI-Generated Images

Respecting Our Deities: A Note on AI-Generated Images
Dear All,

Here is one of the very few old style artistic representation of Ma Durga which is largely based on scriptures.
Like:
  • She has 8 hands
  • Respective astras in each hand
  • Is seated on a Tigre / Lion
  • Wears a Golden Crown with aura
  • Has an auspicious look on her face
  • Her vastra and abharanas cover her appropriately
  • She holds abhaya mudra in her right hand

Distorted and disrespectful images of female deities.

When we see photos of deities created by AI, we can easily distinguish divine art from perversion such as the photo below of Goddess Kali as a young girl who looks doped and devoid of all divinity.

Another photo of Kali generated by AI being called as Hot and sexy as shown below.

Here the goddess kali being depicted in demonic and vulgar manner.
We all can distinguish these images from the true representation and we simply ignore them, but there are many more photos generated by AI which are deceptively mis representing our deities as mentioned below.  While these images might seem appealing, they often lack accuracy and are misrepresenting our sacred figures.

Please take a look at this image of Saraswati, you will find it to be a divine, very fresh and beautiful new image but please observe closely, it is missing a finger in the right hand of the goddess.
Next photo, look at the left hand of the goddess, her hands are not holding the conch properly, the conch is placed on top of the hand. There is another ankusha like astra that is not anchored at all and what is the astra she is holding in the right hand? If it is Durga then it must be her trishula.
Even her vastra is compromising the modest demeanor of the deity.

Here we see Kali being represented as a child, while it may look cute and adorable but it is a misrepresentation of Kali godess as she does not have a Bala roopa as per scriptures.

We only have bala tripura sundari, bala subramanya, bala krishna, bala ganesha etc as child deities.

Distorted and disrespectful images of male deities.

Here Shiva is represented in a very unacceptable way.

  • Shiva is seated in Kailasa and not on a throne of Skulls (the throne skulls is a game imagination).
  • Shiva's vahana is Nandi and not wolves or dogs.
  • Kala bhairava has a Shwana (type of dog) but he is always represented in standing posture as he is a kshetra paala.

Here we see a representation of Shree Hanuman in a very foolish way.

  • He is shown without wearing his sacred thread (Kande moonj janevu saaje)
  • His weapon is Gadha, not the weird looking thing shown here
  • Ashwathama as a mani on his forehead not Hanuman
  • Our deities dont have battle scars (as shown here in the face) as their body is divine (Divya)
  • Hanuman has too many toes in his feet.

Distorting sacred "Moorti Kalpana" is not acceptable.  The artistic representation of our deities ("Moorti Kalpana") is deeply rooted in tradition and symbolism. AI-generated images can't abide by these traditions.

Why we need to be cautious with AI (Artificial Intelligence):

  • AI is an extremely powerful tool which is clearly falling into wrong hands.
  • AI gathers information from the Internet and input provided by its creators. This input may contain a lot of junk, toxic information about our culture and AI cannot easily differentiate the correct from the incorrect.
  • AI generated images of goddess often represent them as lustful women, because our models, film actors, videos on the internet all tend to portray how a good looking women should be - sadly this translates into seductive, vulgar images of goddess which are an imagination of toxic men who see women only as flesh and nothing more.
  • The same also applies to male deities which often look like beasts or game characters with no divinity, wisdom of a protector and saviour.
  • In the current version of AI there are incorrect depictions such as anatomical errors, missing fingers, distorted and misplaced objects, or incorrect postures.

What can you do?

Let's be respectful and avoid using AI-generated images of our deities. Instead, let's rely on traditional art and images that have been carefully crafted with reverence and understanding.

Sadly we cannot take down all these images from the Internet, but you can do the following to show your true understanding of Sanathana Dharma.

  • Do not forward WhatsApp messages that contain such AI generated images which are disrespectful to our culture.
  • Please gently educate people who are innocently using and sharing such images as WhatsApp profiles or messages.
  • On Facebook, WhatsApp or any other social media, if you find any deities being misrepresented please make sure to respectfully convey that this is adharma.
  • Please share and encourage others to share real images of deities from temples or other sacred pilgrimage centres, this will increase our knowledge and will also give us the Punya of Darshana of our deities.
